The Donroe Doctrine, as coined by the New York Post, is a corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine was created by President James Monroe in 1823 following the War of 1812.

The war’s results led to a surge in American national pride, which prompted Monroe to demand that Europe keep its hands off of the Americas, particularly that Europe stop the colonization of Latin America.

In exchange for European compliance with the Monroe Doctrine, the United States vowed to stay neutral in European affairs.

In contrast to the Monroe Doctrine that looked to protect the Americas from Europe, the new Donroe Doctrine looks to protect the Americas from China, Russia, and Iran.

The Donroe Doctrine signals a shift away from a non-interventionist, passive approach to an active, militant approach to governing the Americas. For example, the United States is more actively involving itself in Latin-American trade and governance.

Examples of the Donroe Doctrine in action can be seen in:

  • Trump’s active approach to combating narcoterrorism through shooting down alleged drug traffickers’ vessels, imposing sanctions and embargoes on enemies, and even capturing Nicolás Maduro, who Trump deemed to be corrupt.
  • Trump demanding increased control over countries like Greenland, Venezuela, Cuba, and Venezuela to cut their economic ties with Iran and Russia
  • Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America to assert United States dominance

The Donroe Doctrine is essential to shaping the United States’ current foreign policy. Always be on the lookout for its influences!
